The jaw is a common area I check at Cable Beach Chiropractic in Broome, which can surprise people! Jaw pain, muscle tension, teeth clenching and grinding are super common problems, and ones that can contribute to or directly cause neck pain and headaches.
The jaw is also very interrelated with the low back and pelvis. Issues lower down can cause tightness in the jaw, as the jaw and pelvis counterbalance each other from a postural perspective!
Stress is also something that very much impacts the jaw and can lead to jaw pain, tension, clenching and grinding. Having worked as a chiro in Broome for a couple of months now I've been seeing quite a bit of stress related jaw tension.
How do I help as a Chiropractor? First I give a chiropractic adjustment to release the resulting joint and muscle tension as well as start to relax the body. I’ll usually do some soft tissue work on tight areas, and I have a special jaw release technique where I put on a glove and work in the mouth on the inside of the jaw muscles (IYKYK, this technique can be sore but gives amazing relief from jaw pain and tension!)
Lastly I give home exercises and advice. This is often pretty specific to you and what we’ve talked about in the session - eg if your jaw tension is more from stress, I’ll give specific relaxation and breathing techniques (and recommend other support if appropriate!). If it’s more physical / postural issues I’ll give stretching or strengthening. Sometimes you’ll get a little bit of each.
